Headline: Electoral Register

Electoral Registration forms are being delivered over the next few week to homes throughout the District.  It is important that these forms are filled out and returned immediately as the register will enable you to use your right to vote.  If you are not on the Electoral Register you may be refused credit.

Please use our secure internet web site, free phone number or send us a text message using our SMS service if the details on the form are correct.  Please check your form for details of these.

Alternatively use the prepaid envelope provided to return your form.

If occupants’ details need to be changed, simply cross out the old information and enter the correct details.  Please remember to include 17 year olds, as they should also be added to the form.  All the instructions for completing the form are printed on the reverse side.  Please also use the prepaid envelope if the details on the form need changing.

The forms have a section that those who are not eligible to vote must complete, as it is vital to receive a response from each household.

If we do not receive a response from each household then a canvasser may call to obtain this information, canvassers are due in the area between 4th October to 1st November.

If you are moving before 15th October you should leave the form for the next occupants to complete.  If you will be in residence at the property on the 15th October but are moving after that date, you should still complete the form at your current address, then contact local electoral services office to register once you have moved.

If you have not received a form by 11th September or if you have any queries that are not answered on the form please contact the electoral services department at The Grange, Nutholt Lane, Ely, on 01353 665555

House to house checks were conducted around the area of the offences but no witnesses were located - nobody had seen or heard anything.

We are conducting extra visible patrols in these areas

If you have seen anything regarding these crimes please call in on the Police non-emergency number 0345 456 456 4.

Parking:

There have been 5 parking tickets issued:-

3 in Cheveley

1 in Dullingham

1 in Saxon Street

These were for vehicles parked on the pavement.   Please get the message out to everyone in our villages that the road is for vehicles and the pavement is for pedestrians  Vehicles parked on the pavement may find themselves with a £30 fine.

Schools have parking problems at drop off and pick up times.   Mags and I have had complaints from schools and parents.   Outside all our schools there are single yellow lines and yellow zig zag lines.  Please make sure that you are all aware that vehicles parked on these will be liable to a £30 fine as the yellow lines and yellow zig zag lines are there to PROTECT OUR CHILDREN when they start school in the morning and when they finish school in the afternoon.   Parents must not stop on the lines to drop off or pick up children, they must park further down the road and walk for a short distance to the school - there are no exemptions from this.

Drivers need to read the signs which are clearly visible outside our schools which give details of the timings when you cannot stop, park or unload. The £30 ticket can be issued straight away by the officer as the vehicle is putting the children in danger as soon as it stops.

Speeding:

Unfortunately PC Andy Martin has not been able to conduct speed checks in our area this month due to working on other duties related to the football World Cup.  However he is back with us again now and will be conducting checks over the month of July.

Regards PCSO Mags Harvey and PC Andy Martin

The Next South Neighbourhood Panel Meeting will be held at Burwell Village College Primary School on Wednesday 6th October 2010.

CHEVELEY PARISH COUNCIL

Press Report July 2010

This report is for public information only and does not represent the minutes of the Parish Council Meeting. Full minutes will be posted on the website after approval at the following meeting.

At their meeting on Tuesday 13th July Cheveley Parish Councillors were delighted to welcome Kath Seller from Duchess Park onto the Council as a representative of the North Ward of the Parish.

It was reported that the inaugural issue of the Parish Council Newsletter had been delivered throughout both wards and had been well received with many favourable comments.  As a result of this some residents had contacted the Clerk and the Chairman to voice their concern over local issues.   Amongst these was the anomaly that although the majority of households fall into the school catchment area for Cheveley School and Bottisham Village College others, sometimes in the same road, were included in the Suffolk system even though both wards were situated in Cambridgeshire.  Cambridgeshire County Councillor, Mathew Shuter, kindly attended the meeting to explain the situation.  It was decided that the Parish Council would do as much as possible to address the problem which was extremely worrying to many parents.   The South Neighbourhood Panel which had met on 29th June were also treating the matter as a top priority.

Some parishioners had commented that, although the War Memorial had been restored following the arson attack on it, a darker mark remained where the fire had been started.   Unfortunately the only way to completely remedy this would be to replace the stone which would be extremely costly and it was felt that it should become less noticeable as the monument weathered.

Following a request that the “Give Way” junction where Cheveley High Street meets the B1063 be replaced by a “Stop” sign the meeting was informed that Cambridgeshire County Council were unable to sanction this at County level.

Members of the Parish Council and a representative of East Cambridgeshire County Council had attended the official opening ceremony of the Big Lottery funded play equipment on 30th June and this had been reported in some areas of the local press.

The Clerk had looked into the options available for the Parish Council to be involved in the proposed Affordable Housing scheme for the village of Cheveley.   Details of a Community Land Trust seminar were to be forwarded as soon as they were available and it was hoped that as many Councillors as possible would attend.

A diseased Horse Chestnut tree in the cemetery had been felled on the advice of tree specialists.   Friends of Cheveley Cemetery would be meeting again on Saturday 31st July at 9 am and anyone interested would be very welcome.

Two vacancies in the South Ward and one in the North Ward remain for Parish Councillors.   Anyone interested should contact the Clerk, Elaine Taylor, on 01440 821088.   Previous Parish Councillors are welcome to apply.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 14th September at 7.30 pm in the Community Room of Cheveley School.   There will be no scheduled meeting in August.

Please note that minutes of all meetings can be viewed at www.Cheveley-pc.org.uk or by contacting the Clerk to the Parish Council.

Cheveley Parish

Cheveley parish has a population of around 1,900 people and comprises two wards - the South Ward, which contains the rural village of Cheveley and is situated approximately three miles south-east of Newmarket and the North Ward, which is situated on the fringes of Newmarket and includes the area between Duchess Drive, and Ashley Road.

The village is linear in nature and the central part, which has been designated as a Conservation Area contains a number of thatched properties some dating back to the 1600s. The use of flint, particularly for the building of boundary walls adds to the character of the village. Click here for details of Cheveley's history or Click here to see more  photographs.

The church of St Mary and the Sacred Host of Heaven, which is situated at the centre of the village in the Conservation Area dates back to the late 13th century. There is also a United Reformed church in the village.

The facilities within the village of Cheveley include a primary school, a recreation ground with a children’s play area and a sports pavilion, a public house, a grocery shop and post office and a community room that is available for hire by local groups. There is a regular bus service to Newmarket.

There are a number of clubs and organisations operating in the village community including the Women’s Institute, the Community Association, a men’s football team, Evergreens, the British Legion, Brownies and a playgroup.
