CHEVELEY PARISH COUNCIL

Press Report October 2008

This report is for public information only and does not represent the minutes of the Parish Council Meeting. Full minutes will be posted on the website after approval at the following month's meeting.

The Cheveley Parish Council meeting on 14th October was once again attended by residents of the North Ward anxious to learn of the latest position concerning access between Centre Drive and Duchess Drive via Meadow Lane. The Parish Clerk was able to report that she had been present at a meeting with David Wilson Homes and Cambridgeshire County Council representatives and that, as a result of this, the developers indicated that they would produce a proposal from which it was hoped a mutually beneficial solution could be reached. It was emphasised by the Parish Council that any proposal would be put to a public meeting before any decisions were made and that any agreement would have to be legally binding.

Several members of the Parish Council had attended a working party meeting at the cemetery to examine and discuss requirements for replacing and extending the path which is in poor repair and is now insufficient in length. The Parish Council are formulating a formal tender enquiry document for the work to be carried out as soon as practical. In the meantime the Clerk would investigate planning regulations, conservation area requirements and the possibility of temporary closure whilst the work was being undertaken. It was reported that, although some generous donations had been received, there was still a shortfall in the amount required to carry out the improvements. It was hoped that the balance would be made up when a response from other local organisations had been received and possibly by including this in the project budget for 2009/10.

Whilst at the cemetery Councillors noted that areas approaching the Garden of Rest had become overgrown and it was decided to obtain quotations to rectify this.

Other potential projects for 2009/10 were considered including suggestions from members of the public for a village hall, skate park and model boating lake. A priority list will be set at the next meeting which is to be held on Tuesday 11th November in the Community Room, Cheveley School at 7.30 pm.

Please note that minutes of all meetings can be viewed at www.Cheveley-pc.org.uk or by contacting the Clerk to the Parish Council.

Cheveley Parish

Cheveley parish has a population of around 1,900 people and comprises two wards - the South Ward, which contains the rural village of Cheveley and is situated approximately three miles south-east of Newmarket and the North Ward, which is situated on the fringes of Newmarket and includes the area between Duchess Drive, and Ashley Road.

The village is linear in nature and the central part, which has been designated as a Conservation Area contains a number of thatched properties some dating back to the 1600s. The use of flint, particularly for the building of boundary walls adds to the character of the village. Click here for details of Cheveley's history or Click here to see more  photographs.

The church of St Mary and the Sacred Host of Heaven, which is situated at the centre of the village in the Conservation Area dates back to the late 13th century. There is also a United Reformed church in the village.

The facilities within the village of Cheveley include a primary school, a recreation ground with a children’s play area and a sports pavilion, a public house, a grocery shop and post office and a community room that is available for hire by local groups. There is a regular bus service to Newmarket.

There are a number of clubs and organisations operating in the village community including the Women’s Institute, the Community Association, a men’s football team, Evergreens, the British Legion, Brownies and a playgroup.
